Reflections (15 minutes) Write your thoughts individually, then share with the group. Share at least one response from both 1 and 2 below.
Ins/Outs (20 minutes) On post-it notes, write down behaviors we want to see in our school environment, as well as behaviors we want to leave out of our school environment. Post them on a shared wall (with a large rectangle to contain “ins,” leaving out the “outs”). Sort/Connect (20 minutes) Erase the rectangle, and sort the post-it notes into categories. Students can determine the categories, but they also need to name the categories. Elaborate (20 minutes) Write declarative statements for each category (short paragraphs). Recommended: Student groups of 3-4, and assign categories to them to write about. After groups complete their statements, you may take a short bathroom/water break. Connect / Extend / Challenge (30 minutes) Review the previous iteration of the Declaration of Education. Connect: How is this version similar to the discussion your group has had today? Where is the overlap? Extend: What did your group discuss that isn’t in the previous DoE? What is in the previous DoE that isn’t in your discussion? Challenge: Should the missing parts (from “extend”) be included? Why/why not? What structure should the DoE exist in? Prepare to Present (60 minutes) What will be the best way to communicate our conversation to the rest of school in Town Hall? Who will speak? Who will meet with Mike after school this week to create a draft with other volunteers? Lunch: 11:05 - 11:35 11:35 - 12:45 | Town Hall Each group shares their DoE discussion from Advisory. Who are the DoE volunteers for after school (Thursday/Friday)? Brainstorm ideas for Declaration format (slideshow, wall signage). How does the Declaration of Education connect to Maker Time with ÉMS students? What are our expectations for working with younger students?
